How to know if a supplement is good quality: a guide to choosing wisely

Table of contents
The supplements market grows year after year and, at the same time, our doubts must grow: how do I know if a supplement is of good quality? How do I tell the difference between an effective formula and one that just sounds good? What should I look for before buying?
These questions are especially important if you're looking for nootropics or functional supplements that help you in your day to day to improve concentration, combat stress or sleep better.
In this article we give you six keys so you can assess the quality of a supplement yourself and, along the way, we show you how we apply them at ZZEN Labs when formulating ours.
Active ingredients with scientific evidence
The basis of any effective supplement is that it includes ingredients with scientific studies backing their effect, especially when it comes to nootropic formulas. A quality supplement shouldn't include fillers or trendy substances with no real usefulness.
For example, our ZZEN Focus contains ingredients such as Bacopa monnieri (40% bacosides), L-theanine, Ginkgo biloba (24% ginkgo flavone glycosides) or Rhodiola rosea (3% rosavins, 1% salidrosides), all with clinical trials backing their cognitive benefits.
Effective doses, not decorative ones
It's not enough to include a good ingredient: it must be in the right dose. Many brands use symbolic amounts so they can mention them on the label, but which aren't effective.
Therefore, look for products that detail the exact milligrams per ingredient and, if possible, the concentration standard; for example, 40% bacosides in Bacopa or 10% withanolides in ashwagandha.
Clean formulas without unnecessary fillers
A well-formulated supplement doesn't need added sugars, artificial colourings or industrial preservatives. The cleaner its profile, the better the absorption and the lower the risk of intolerances.
With ZZEN Calm, an ashwagandha supplement in capsules, we only use Ashwagandha KSM-66® (600 mg), Melissa dry extract (200 mg) and dry saffron extract (30 mg). Nothing else.
Transparency in labelling
A quality supplement must show its complete formula. If you see confusing labels with proprietary blends or exclusive complexes without amounts per ingredient, be wary.
Manufacturing with guarantees
Make sure the supplement is manufactured under Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), with laboratory quality controls and complying with food safety regulations.
At ZZEN Labs, all our products are manufactured in certified Spanish laboratories under GMP regulations and pass microbiological, heavy metal and stability controls.

Functional, not miraculous, approach
Be wary of supplements that promise immediate or miraculous results. Cognitive improvement, rest or emotional wellbeing are processes, not quick tricks. A good supplement should accompany you, not replace you.
How to identify a quality supplement
Before buying a supplement, make sure it meets at least these six points:
|
Key |
What to check on the label |
|
Scientific evidence |
Ingredients with studies backing their effect |
|
Effective doses |
Exact milligrams, not symbolic amounts |
|
Clean formula |
No added sugars, colourings or fillers |
|
Transparency |
Complete formula, without opaque proprietary blends |
|
Manufacturing with guarantees |
GMP regulations and laboratory controls |
|
Honest communication |
No promises of miraculous results |
*Extra tip: if the label doesn't let you work out how much active ingredient you take per capsule, you already have your answer. A formula that can't be shown in detail is usually a formula that doesn't hold up to comparison.

Why the ZZEN Labs approach starts here
Choosing a supplement well isn't about finding the flashiest one, but the one that can prove what it says. Those six keys are the same ones we measure ourselves against every time we formulate something.
“A good formula doesn't need to convince you. It's enough for it to let itself be read.”
Discover our products at ZZEN Labs and check for yourself why we're a different alternative: without empty promises, but with real commitment to your wellbeing.
